Weekly News Rundown Stories – Sunday 21st April 2024

Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at a serious, crazy, and happy news story from the past week.

Serious News

MPs have backed a plan to ban the purchase of cigarettes to anyone who was born after 2009.

The stance has been pushed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and survived opposition from many leading Tory figures – which included two former Prime Ministers.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill passed by 383 votes to 67. If the bill becomes law, then it will be one of the strictest across the world.

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has called the plan a “smoke free generation”, however Liz Truss voted against the bill as it limits personal freedom.

The bill has been bought to the spotlight, as figures say that one in five children have tried vaping, although it is illegal for those under 18, with the hope of making vapes less appealing with restrictions on the flavours and packaging.

Crazy News

Following on from last week’s news of the doll’s house that went for auction last week, this week saw a private collection of rare Barbie dolls sell for £2,320.

The highest value reached was a Marie Antionette doll which was valued at £640, while a Queen Elizabeth I doll made £600. Both a “haunted beauty vampire” and a figurine depicting Italy’s Empress Josephine were priced at £540.

The auction took place at Canterbury Auction Galleries, and included other items such as Pokémon cards, Happy Meal toys and paintings which all together sold for more than double its predicted price at £12,280.

Happy News

A man from Gloucestershire is hoping to run seven marathons in seven days in the hope of raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Phil Wiseman began his challenge on Monday from his childhood home of Apperley, edging towards London for the big London Marathon that he will be taking part in today.

Phil’s mother has MS, and she is “incredibly proud” and “can’t comprehend what he’s doing”.

Speaking of the charity, Phil says: “I'll do it in rain, I'll do it in sun, I'll do it in wind and a bit of flood water to get through doesn't stop me either”
