It's official! Pineapple DOES go with pizza!

The debate about whether pineapple belongs on a pizza is a longstanding one, but new research shows the majority (62%) of Brits now say yes to pineapple with savoury dishes…

A sentiment that’s shared by David Beckham, who admits to “liking pineapple and baked beans on the same plate”.

The survey by Dole Sunshine Company showed that those aged 70+ are the biggest fans, with seven in 10 embracing this once polarising sweet and savoury mash-up, once popular in the Victorian era at breakfast time.

Surprisingly, those aged 18-34 are significantly more trepidatious, with just over half (52%) willing to give it a try.

There is also a significant divide across the country, with those in Coventry the biggest fans and those in Winchester liking the combination the least.

When asked ‘what classic UK dish would you dare to add pineapple to?’ the mighty Fry Up topped the list a fifth (21%) of men voted to give it a go, versus 16% of women.

Londoners were the most likely to give the combo a try (25%) which was more than those in any other UK city.

And what would people swap out to make way for pineapple on in their ‘full English’? Overall, 30% of the UK went with black pudding, followed by tomatoes at 16%.

In Liverpool, 28% of residents said they’d forgo mushrooms in favour of pineapple. Whilst more than half (54%) of those in Edinburgh say they wouldn’t swap anything.

And it’s not just Fry Ups, one in ten of those over 65 reckon they’d give pineapple a go with their omelette, whilst a fifth of those living in Lincoln think it would taste great in a smoked salmon bagel.

A third (31%) of Brits also rated pineapple highly as a porridge topping.

Those in Worcester are unequivocal, however with 60% saying pineapple doesn’t belong in ANY breakfast dish.

When asked about his favourite comfort dish, David Beckham has frequently given a shout-out to his childhood comfort dish of gammon, eggs, tinned pineapple and coleslaw – proving that A List talent is saying a firm YES to pineapple and savoury combo at mealtimes.

TV presenter and foodie Angellica Bell tells us she's a fan of mixing sweet and savoury too!
