Sisters Share the Joys of Fostering: Over 60 Lives Changed

On Maritime Radio's Big Show, Chloe and Hannah Maynard shared their extraordinary experiences growing up in a household that fostered over 60 children. Their heartfelt interview shed light on the challenges and joys of fostering while encouraging others to consider opening their homes to needy children.

The sisters recounted their childhood, shaped by their mum's dedication to fostering. Hannah recalled her early misunderstanding of the process:
"At first it was... a bit different. When I was younger, I would get a bit mixed up with what a child carer was versus a foster carer. The first foster child I remember seeing was a baby. I thought, 'Oh, maybe he'd go home after,' but then he was still there the next day and the day after that. Then I started to get the gist of it—like, oh wow, okay. Once I understood, I felt more comfortable with it."

Chloe chimed in to share how their mum's commitment inspired them:
"Helping raise over 60 children is an incredible achievement. Our home was always full of energy, love, and lessons. One memory that stands out is when we were driving back from Ikea—such everyday moments stick with you because they were shared with all the kids who came into our lives."

The sisters also addressed the pressing need for more foster families in the UK. In 2023, over 100,000 children were in the care system, with around 38,000 more entering each year—one child every 15 minutes. Unfortunately, a shortage of foster carers often means sibling groups are separated, and 13% of children are moved more than 20 miles from their home borough.

Chloe and Hannah emphasised the importance of keeping children close to their communities whenever possible, sharing how their local connections benefited the foster children in their care. Their story is a powerful reminder of how fostering changes lives—not just for the children but also for the families involved.
