A set of new digital border checks between the UK and Europe are set to go live in October, according to the European Commission.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace the current method of stamping passports and will instead require visitors from outside the European Union to register fingerprints, photo and passport details instead.
Initially expected to launch on 10th November 2024, it was delayed as the technology was not ready.
These checks will take place at Dover, Folkestone and St Pancras – amid fears of longer delays.
Crazy News
A large blue whale sculpture has popped up at Canary Wharf – not just for photos but also as a reminder of plastic waste within the oceans.
The 11m (36ft) whale is made from plastic litter found on the beaches of Hawaii, with its concrete base made of spent coffee grounds from the local cafes and restaurants.
Canary Wharf Group are the developers behind the piece of art, as Lowri Harries says: “Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the recycled plastic used in the sculpture – the installation process has also been carefully considered to reduce its carbon footprint. Whether visitors come to the Wharf specifically to see this iconic sculpture up close, or it catches their eye when passing through, we hope it provides everyone with some pause for thought”.
Artists Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang added: “Whale on the Wharf is a physical example of why we need to change how we use and dispose of plastic in the world today, and we're thrilled to be showcasing this piece for the first time in the UK in Canary Wharf's waters”.
