Weekly News Rundown Stories – Sunday 28th July 2024

Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at a serious, crazy, and happy news story from the past week.

Serious News
In the early hours of Friday morning, an tech issue brought many parts of the world to a standstill, affecting industries within travel, banking, healthcare and retail across many countries.

The companies using both Windows and CrowdStrike anti-virus software were unable to access systems due to the dreaded blue screen of death.

Being described as the biggest outage ever, planes were grounded or those already in the air had to stay airborne. Where I work, we couldn’t access systems until midday.

Even though most systems are now back up and running, it could still be a while until backlogs and the financial issues that this has caused will all be resolved, settled and cleared.

Crazy News
Greggs teamed up with banking giant Monzo to form a pop-up sausage roll machine, resembling a real life cash machine.

With the two companies forming the unlikely alliance on X (Twitter), Greggs began by commenting on a Monzo Tweet saying “Imagine if these dispensed Sausage Rolls instead of cash”. Monzo then posted the same image, with the pastry giant’s name on the ATMs with sausage rolls being dispensed and challenging Greggs to “make this happen”.

Once the machine was dispensing the baked goods, an orderly line was quickly forming.

Happy News
On Monday, it was announced that Maritime Radio will be turning to a digital future next year.

Communications regulator, Ofcom, have announced that they are awarding the contract to run digital radio DAB, services in south east London and north west Kent to greenDAB Limited - a joint venture between the parent company of Maritime Radio, Greenwich Media and Bloomsbury Institute.

A spokesperson from greenDAB says, “What it means for listeners, is a greater choice of radio stations available throughout the area. It also opens up space for smaller radio stations to reach a greater audience".

The new service will also allow listeners to tune in to Maritime Radio on digital radios for the first time.
