The John Reen Jog on Radio Show Best Bits Podcast

Sunday, 24 November 2019 - 19 minutes

John Reen Talks to Daria Morris on Maritime Radio 96.5 FM about her daughter Rosie who was born with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy and the need to fund raise to pay for a life changing operation.

Rosie was born 8 weeks premature. At the age of one she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a particular type known as spastic diplegia which means the brain damage occurred at birth has predominately affected her lower limbs.

Rosie is an incredibly curious and active 5 year old from Plumstead in London. She wishes to run, jump, climb, sit straight without losing her balance, play football and dance. Rosie has a fighting spirit, determined and willing, she is bubbly, creative, thoughtful, smart and very popular amongst her peers.

While there is no cure for Cerebral Palsy, there are treatments that can radically improve her quality of life. Rosie’s Legs is a campaign raising money to fund a particular surgery and rehabilitation process known as SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy).

Through the ups and downs, ongoing therapy, surgeries, triumphs and struggles, nothing dulls Rosie’s sparkle. With each day, Rosie bravely defeats the odds, working towards the day she may one day walk independently.

Unfortunately, Rosie doesn’t meet the NICE funding criteria to have this life-changing surgery under the NHS, namely due to an arbitrary criteria that has no bearing on the success of the surgery. It is a costly procedure of £100,000 to cover the surgery, rehabilitation and equipment needed for the years of intensive recovery.
