Greenwich pleas for extended cost-of-living support as government plans to axe vital fund.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich are urging residents to join their fight against the government's plan to scrap the Household Support Fund (HSF) in April. This fund provides vital support to over 24,000 vulnerable residents struggling with food and energy costs amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis.
"Axing this funding now would be irresponsible," says Councillor Mariam Lolavar. "Families are having to choose between heating and eating, and the HSF has been a lifeline for them."
The council fears that losing this support will push more people into crisis, increasing demand for already stretched services like the NHS and temporary accommodation.
They are calling on residents to sign a petition urging the government to extend the HSF. "Nobody can say the crisis is over," says Lolavar. "We need to continue supporting those who need it most."
