TfL is seeking public feedback on the proposed SL11 express bus route, which aims to improve connectivity between Abbey Wood and North Greenwich, support Thamesmead’s regeneration, and enhance South East London’s transport network.
Transport for London (TfL) has announced a public consultation on the proposed SL11 express bus route, which would run between Abbey Wood and North Greenwich via Thamesmead and Woolwich. The SL11 is set to enhance connectivity in South East London, supporting ongoing regeneration efforts in Thamesmead and complementing proposals for a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension. The consultation is open from 3 March 2025 to 13 April 2025, allowing Londoners to provide feedback on the plans.
Enhancing Connectivity in South East London
The proposed SL11 route is part of TfL's broader Superloop initiative, a network of express bus services designed to provide faster connections in outer London. If approved, the SL11 would replace and renumber route 472, offering quicker journeys between Abbey Wood and North Greenwich. This would facilitate seamless interchanges with key transport hubs, including the Elizabeth line, DLR, London Underground, and National Rail services.
The SL11 would also integrate with the wider Superloop network, connecting to the SL3 at Abbey Wood and Thamesmead. Thanks to the Mayor's Hopper fare, passengers can enjoy unlimited bus journeys within an hour for just £1.75, making public transport more accessible and cost-effective.
The Growing Success of the Superloop Network
Since its launch in 2023, the Superloop network has transformed travel across outer London. The network spans 138km and has added more than six million kilometres annually to London's bus services. Passenger numbers on Superloop corridors have increased by 11%, surpassing the network-wide average growth of 9%. The introduction of the SL11 aims to build on this success, providing a faster and more reliable alternative for commuters and residents in South East London.
Community and Leadership Support
Local leaders have strongly supported the SL11, emphasising its potential benefits for residents and businesses. Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, highlighted the route's role in linking key destinations such as Abbey Wood, Woolwich, Charlton, and North Greenwich while supporting Thamesmead's regeneration.
Councillor Averil Lekau, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport, underscored the importance of the SL11 in encouraging sustainable travel. She urged residents to participate in the consultation to help shape a service that meets the community's needs and contributes to London's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
Have Your Say
TfL invites Londoners to share their views on the proposed SL11 route by participating in the consultation before it closes on 13 April 2025. Public feedback will play a crucial role in refining the service to ensure it effectively meets the needs of South East London's growing population.
