Spain defeated England in the final of Euro 2024 to clinch a record fourth UEFA European Championship victory last Sunday following their 2–1 defeat of England. Critics widely considered the Championship victory that Spain won to have been fully deserved with many people stating that they were comfortably the best team in the tournament having been the best team in all the games they played in. England had reached the final despite many critics believing that they had reached the final without playing particularly well in any of the games they had played in. Spain had the upper hand on England and were the better team for most of the match. However, it was not until the beginning of the second half that the deadlock was broken with Spain scoring with a goal from left-winger Nico Williams who netted just inside the penalty area following an assist by right-winger Lamine Yamal. Although second-best for most of the game, England equalized in the 73rd minute following a strike by Chelsea forward Cole Palmer who scored with a low hit left-footed strike from the edge of the box. However, Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal for Spain with only four minutes remaining in the 86th minute scoring past England Jordan Pickford following a cross by Spain left Marc Cucurella. Spain's tournament victory was their first major trophy since the European Championship victory in 2012 and their first under new manager Luis de la Fuente. England defeat in the final made them the first national team to lose back-to-back successive European Championship finals following their defeat by Italy in the last championships final in 2020.
